The use of essential oils can be a very powerful and effective way to support our mental wellbeing.
Our sense of smell is the most powerful and sophisticated of all the senses and when we inhale an essential oil their aromatic compounds travel through our noses and connect at receptor sites. These send an immediate message to the olfactory bulb which is connected to the amygdala, hippocampus and other parts of our brain.
These sections of our brain are known as the emotional brain’ because they regulate emotions, memories, motivation, stress levels and hormone balance.
By tapping into this part of our brain through inhaling the aromatic compounds of essential oils, such as limonene in citrus oils for example, known for it’s uplifting and mood boosting benefits, we can create positive emotions and memories.
